What a
change in weather this morning…beautiful blue skies and it was like
spring! The Queen Mary was docked where
we should have been and the Grandeur of the Seas later joined us at the dock
that was farthest away. They shuttled us
to the Cunard terminal where we were able to get a cab to the rental car agency
downtown. We got a Ford Escape which was
comfortable for the four of us. Kay
navigated (I must give her credit) and Debbie drove from downtown to Peggy’s
Cove. It was an absolutely beautiful
drive but sadly the peak leaf color was past here and most of the trees were
already devoid of leaves. There were just
a couple of late bloomers along the way.
The scenery was amazing even without the trees and we had such a fun
day. The little villages along the way
were all so picturesque. We have found
that everywhere we have been in Canada it is so clean and people take pride in
their properties. Even the smallest
properties that may need a paint job were still looking neat and clean. Lots of them decorated for Halloween too. We found a couple along the way that we
needed to take photos of because they were so creative and cute. We also stopped at this B&B that had a
statute outside that looked like the Gorton’s Fisherman and we felt the need to
take a photo with him. While we were
standing in the road taking photos of each other this guy driving a cab was
blowing his horn at us and laughing.
Everyone we have met has been so nice.
We got to
Peggy’s Cove and it is the most beautiful little place you have ever seen. Obviously the seas can be treacherous here
but today it was gorgeous! The tide was
out and it was pretty calm. We walked
down to the lighthouse and carefully climbed around some of the boulders and
rocks that support the lighthouse. You
are warned about falling into the sea and I will post the photo I took of the
warning closest to the lighthouse. The
village itself is like something out of a coffee table book. Lobster traps and fishing boats and cute
little houses. You can tell that this is
not how it looks most of the time since the terrain is rough and there are no
trees or plants that grow in the cold salt air.
We walked through the gift shop and Kay had to have some Lobster Potato
Chips. I did not have any but the other
three said they tasted like BBQ chips and if you didn’t know better you
wouldn’t know they were lobster chips.
We headed on
to the Swiss Air Memorial which was right down the road. I didn’t realize that the people here tried
to search and rescue people from that flight.
The memorial was very nice and a very peaceful place.
We decided
to take a different coastal route back to Halifax and enjoyed the drive. We stopped to get some drinks and Kay again
was on with her navigational skills and got us back to the Avis agency. We were excited when the guy drove us back to
the port instead of us having to take a cab.
We walked through the Seaport Market area where there were lots of
vendors. We then caught the shuttle back to the ship. The past guest party was at 5 so we went for
the free cocktails of course.
We have had
issues with getting food in the main dining room that is hot. Tonight was no exception. We spoke with both the waiter and the head
waiter…again. Tonight they took Kay’s
chicken back and brought her another one and it wasn’t much better than the
first one. They don’t seem to get
it. It is hard to believe that we are
the only ones having this problem.
Judy went to
the showroom to hold us some seats and the other three of us went to the
casino. I did very well with a three of
a kind on three card poker and for a while I was on a real win streak. We went to the show which was a broadway type
show but we didn’t recognize many of the songs.
So ended the night. One note on
Halifax is that if you are a lighthouse person, this is the place to be. If you missed one at sail away, there was
another around the bend, then another and another. We watched from the past guest party that was
held at a room in the rear of the ship.
Happy you got some good weather! Was Peggy's cove someplace you had heard about and wanted to visit?
ReplyDeleteVery jealous of your luck in the casino - hope it continues!
