We weren’t
sure we would get to stop here today but
the worst of the weather apparently stayed off shore. Our cabin is just above the life boats so we
knew we arrived at 6:40 AM when they started lowering them to use as tenders. We were then up even though our wake up call
was not until 7:30. We were excited to
see that we were here and going ahead with our Lighthouse excursion that Debbie
and I had chosen. We were also happy to
be back in the states and able to use our cell phones again. I began by sending Kay 20 text messages
asking “Are you up yet”? We were already
ashore when I got her reply.
After taking
the tender into the pier we were informed that our tour had been
cancelled. This was due to rough seas
outside the harbor as this was a boat tour of the coastline. We were bummed that we had to go ashore to
find out but now we were there at not yet 9 AM and most of the stores that are
still operating open at 9. We started
walking and it started to drizzle. We
went from one store to another then we heard Kay and Judy were about a block
behind us and we waited for them to catch up.
Even in bad
weather it is easy to see why this is such a popular little town. It is the typical New England seaside
town. Very quaint and hilly…with all
roads leading down to the sea. The ship
is at anchor here as there is not a dock big enough here. I guess what I didn’t know about Maine is
that is has hundreds of little islands all around the coastline. Everywhere you look you see them so I would
imagine navigation is a serious concern getting in and out of here. We enjoyed shopping and all of us purchased a
few items at various places. Everything
here is about lobsters too and I love the little sayings on the shirts. One had a lobster and a lobster pot sitting
side by side and the caption was “Say no to pot”! I know, corny but cute. It started raining harder and the wind
started to blow so we went to Kay’s favorite place The West St.
Restaurant. Kay and Judy had both been
to Bar Harbor many times and she said this is the best so who are we to
argue? Again, Kay was correct. Debbie and I had the lunch special which was
a lobster roll, clam chowder (I had lobster bisque), fries, cole slaw and
homemade Maine blueberry pie. I have to
say I am not a huge blueberry fan but this was the best pie I have tasted since
my great grandmother passed away.
OMG! The food at this place was wonderful! Judy and Kay both had the clam chowder then
split an order of scallops which they didn’t find as good as they had remembered. We all had pie and ice cream!
After our great
lunch, Judy and I decided to return to the ship to take a hot shower and relax before
dinner. Kay and Debbie were wanting to shop some more and I felt like I am
getting a cold. I bought some cold meds
and thought I would get started on them. I wanted to write the blog and call mom now
that we were able to make calls again.
We had a disappointing
experience at the steak house last night.
We just seem to have issues with service and food when others at the
same time don’t. We don’t really
understand. Debbie and Kay are
back. Tonight is formal night again….woohoo! We are meeting for cocktails at 5:30 PM. Sail away is at 5 PM. The fog has come and gone all day long but
currently the clouds are hanging in the trees ashore. There is more color here than in Halifax but
still it is past peak here too. Tomorrow
is Portland and then we are in Boston and the rest of the girls will join us.
Forgot to check your blog but now I'm caught up. Pretty scenery and good luck getting some hot food.
